Ministry of Transport introduces Komuter service to support Johor RTS Link; 70% completed as of March 31

The transport ministry plans to introduce the Komuter service to support the Rapid Transit System Link (RTS Link) scheduled to come online in 2027, Bernama reported.

According to Transport Minister Anthony Loke, this is because the RTS Link station in Bukit Chagar will also house the Gemas-Johor Bahru Twin Train Project located below the RTS station.

“The Komuter service is available in Kuala Lumpur and [the] North; In the south there is still no. We have ETS between Gemas and JB, we are discussing how to integrate the ETS track with RTS. So people in Senai, Kluang and Kulai can catch the Komuter line to Bukit Chagar, then catch the RTS to Singapore,” Loke said.

Construction of the RTS Link rail infrastructure has reached 70.45%, while the Bukit Chagar immigration, customs and quarantine complex (CIQ) infrastructure is 7.02% complete.

“When the ETS route between Gemas and JB is ready, we don’t want it to be used for just one service. It would be great if it could also be used for Komuter service. This issue is being researched, [and] We will look into the details before introducing it in Johor Bahru,” the Transport Minister added.

Loke said RTS Link Johor Bahru- Singapore station in Bukit Chagar area is considered the hub of the main public transport system in the state. “Our vision is that when RTS Link is ready, it will be the catalyst and hub for many different public transport systems in the future. Our policy is to encourage the use of public transport in the future,” he added.

A new multi-story park and ride facility is also being built for RTS Link passengers and will include 1,000 parking spaces. There will also be 700 parking spaces provided at Coronation Square exclusively for RTS Link passengers, located 400 meters from Bukit Chagar. “This means there will be 1,700 parking spaces for RTS Link passengers,” the Transport Minister said.

In January this year, one iconic connection for RTS Johor Bahru- Singapore Link was carried out between Malaysia and Singapore, witnessed by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his Singaporean counterpart Lee Hsien Loong. The RTS link was 65% complete as of the end of last year and is currently underway is on track for completion in December 2026.
