New York golf course incorporates new alcohol policy that will require a ‘bottling fee,’ check Breathalyzer

A golf course in the Buffalo area quickly reversed course toward a new set of rules and regulations regarding drinking. The Buffalo Tournament Club in Lancaster, NY received a lot of backlash on social media when it announced new policies that require certain players to take the Breathalyzer test at the end of their round. Instead of using drink carts, the Buffalo Tournament Club opted to let players bring their own alcohol for a “bottle fee”. All players in the group pay a fee, which is $5 for 18 holes and $3 for 9 holes, regardless of whether or not they drink.

Any player who didn’t drink during the round can get a refund by taking the Breathalyzer test for $1. If the player passes the test, they will be refunded the corkage fee and the Breath Analyzer fee.

When the club’s new policies surfaced on social media, it received quite a response. In fact, the news was so poorly received that the Buffalo Tournament Club canceled the new rules.

In an interview with The Buffalo NewsClub owner Timothy Davis said few people have complained directly to him, but there was enough anger on social media for the business to change direction pretty quickly.

“We said, ‘Look, there’s too many people unhappy and we’re going to stop it right away,'” Davis said.

In 2022, the corkage fee will be voluntary for golfers who wish to drink alcohol outside on the course. However, Davis told The Buffalo News that so few people adhered to that policy the club decided to make a corkage fee mandatory for all golfers 21 years of age and older.

The course has now reverted to banning alcohol outside, but Davis said the club won’t be checking fridges or bags. He will only ask to hide alcohol outside around the clubhouse area.
