Mahindra eyeing electric cars for Australia


Local division of Mahindra confirmed that they plan to bring back at least one of the company’s products electric car series coming soon (EVs) to Australia.

Mahindra Automotive Australia marketing director James Halliwell explained at the local media launch of the Scorpio SUV, the company will “evaluate some of those models for this market” and will likely launch electric vehicles there sometime around 2025 or 2026.

The first of these five Mahindra electric SUVs, named XUV.E8, will go on sale in India by the end of 2024. The other four will be launched in the following years.

At this stage, it remains unclear which of the five upcoming electric vehicles Mahindra is evaluating for a local launch. The brand is also currently producing an electric version of the XUV400, an improved version SsangYong Tivoli crossover, although its future is unclear.

EQUAL previous report, these five electric SUVs will split into two new sub-brands: XUV.e, which features a bronze version of Mahindra’s existing Twin Peaks badge and promises to “build on Mahindra’s legacy”; and BE, will offer cars with more “bold” styling.

They will all be manufactured at a new EV plant in Chakan, India alongside the existing production facility for internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Mahindra has invested $3 million in this new EV plant and construction is now underway.

These electric vehicles will use electric motors, battery and battery system components used in vehicles on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB architecture, the foundation for models such as VolkswagenID.4 And Cupra was born.

They will be based on a new modular platform called Inglo, which uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries with capacities ranging from 60-80kWh.

Mahindra says it will offer two different cell architectures: slab and prismatic. The platform supports fast charging with a capacity of up to 175kW and vehicle charging (V2L).

Inlgo-based models will offer 170kW-210kW rear-wheel drive or 250kW-290kW all-wheel drive, with the latter offering a 0-100km/h time of between five and six seconds .

No claimed range figures have been cited to date.

When these Mahindra electric SUVs arrive in Australia, they will join the list of diesel-powered SUVs and utes.

These diesel-powered vehicles include the recently launched Scorpio, coming soon XUV700as Pik-Up.
