Kunal Kamra: Comedians Under the Command of Hindu Nationalists
Two famous Indian comedians – Kunal Kamra and Munawar Faruqui – have said that performing became unsafe after they received threats from right-wing Hindu nationalists.
Faruqui, a Muslim, was jailed earlier this year for jokes he didn’t even tell.
Authorities said the arrest was in the interest of law and order, and to protect religious sentiments.
But critics say the law is being abused to silence freedom of expression, especially among critics of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The BBC spoke to two comedians about the recent controversies and threats they have faced.
