Demon Slayer become a beast in its own right. From manga, to anime and movies, it consistently tops the charts as one of the most popular series to date. With the release of its new installment, I wanted to find out what makes it so different, at least for me. Demon Slayer Season 2 isn’t holding back with its fights, and that’s quickly becoming its strongest feature.
Demon Slayer shows what ufotable does best. A lot can be said about the plot, characters and speed of the story. But what keeps me constantly hooked is the knowledge that it only gets better. I think this way has very few programs Demon Slayer is animation.
Narrative, Demon Slayer season 2 feels a lot like season 1. It opens with a Mugen Train arc, dividing the series’ story into seven episodes with new music and animations. From there, it moves into the Recreation Area Arc, where the current season is taking place. As our protagonist, Tanjiro is constantly developing the powers he innately possesses while his friends work alongside him. However, season 2 brings something new. The music feels experimental in parts, while the action has an even more painterly quality than before.
That really leads me back to my main point. Demon Slayer works, especially season 2, as it understands what it means to tell a story through wars. A lot into the fight choreography, because at the end of the day, it’s a dance. A competition based purely on passion. Whether a show is live action or fully animated, combat battles always require the same dedication.
When I was watching season 2 of Demon Slayer, I can’t help but think of a few other anime I’ve watched recently that let me down on how they didn’t really capture that fact. Continuous cuts, dependent only on full body shots and the same 1-2 punch sequence will bring all the emotion to a match. Demon Slayer and its animators seem to admit it. The Mugen Train movie was great for a couple of reasons, but the one that always comes to mind is the fight between Kyojuro and Akaza.
Even the moments that lead to action in the Arc Amusement Park immerse you in the characters’ emotional journeys. It’s interesting to think about how the show will go and how intense the next fight will be.
The action and fight sequences never left me speechless when I texted my friends about them. The many artistic styles within them, the explosion of color and the constant movement create a dynamic experience that is hard to find across many media. Personal battles, and Demon Slayer allows you to experience all levels of emotions with the characters. The intimacy and power in season 2 so far has brought me right back to the series. I like a good fight and Demon Slayer is giving me exactly that.
