2025 Omoda C9: Chery flagship SUV approved for launch in Australia


Chery looks to expand its SUV range further in Australia.

Chery is preparing to launch a sub-brand in Australia in the second half of 2024 with Jaecoo. Its debut product, J7sold under the name Chery in China.

Approval documents list two variants of the Omoda C9: a front-wheel drive variant and an all-wheel drive variant, both with a 183bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine combined with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

According to the documents, Omoda C9 measures 4774mm long, 1932mm wide and 1686mm high on one 2800mm The standard long.

Tare weight ranges from 1790kg to 1865kg, while both models ride on 20-inch alloy wheels.

Although there is no complete equipment list, in China the SUV is offered with dual 12.3-inch screens; Heated, ventilated and massaging power front seats wrapped in Nappa leather; LED headlights with adaptive high beams; Panoramic sunroof; and an augmented reality display.

All models use a Sony audio system, with 8 or 14 speakers depending on variant.

There’s also a full suite of active safety and driving assistance technologies, including adaptive cruise control, surround-view cameras, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist and rear cross-traffic assist.

Chery also offers the Exeed Yaoguang, as it is known in China, with a plug-in hybrid powertrain using a 1.5-liter Miller cycle four-cylinder engine.

This is combined with two or three electric motors and a 19.43kWh or 34.46kWh battery. Total system output is 270kW of power and 605Nm of torque with the dual motor configuration or 445kW and 915Nm with the triple motor plug-in drive system.

No plug-in hybrid version appears in the Australian Government’s approval documents.

Chery is busy expanding its Omoda range. In addition to the C9, the rebranded Exeed and the Omoda 5, Chery has also revealed that the Omoda 7 will sit between them.
