Frankie Capan III shot 58, breaking Scottie Scheffler’s record at the Veritex Bank Championship on the Korn Ferry Tour

In an era in golf where it seems like every ranking and record belongs to Scottie Scheffler, there is no one else. Frankie Capan III shot 13-under 58 in Round 1 of the Korn Ferry Tour’s Veritex Bank Championship on Thursday to beat Scheffler’s low score at Texas Rangers Golf Club in Arlington, Texas, by one shot. The number 59 of world number 1 has been considered the standard of the course for 4 years.

The 24-year-old started the day with a par before making four straight birdies to get his round back on track. He remained at 4-under until the par-5 9th, where the big bird landed and allowed Capan to move to 6-under for 29. The eagle at the jump started Capan’s round and was an appetizer for the memorable back 9.

Birdies from Capan’s blade came in the next seven (!) holes, putting him at 13 under on a par-71 layout with two holes remaining. After playing stretches from numbers 9-16 at 9 under, Capan still stood a chance to score a few more points, especially with the par 5 closing in on the floor.

The right-hander holed his first par in a few hours on the par-4 17th and couldn’t put a final par break on his card after hitting a drive on the par-5 18th in a fairway bunker . Instead, Capan settled tied for 18th and 58th in Korn Ferry Tour history.

Capan’s 58 adds to the growing list of under-60 rounds on the Korn Ferry Tour over the past year. A few months ago, Cristobol del Solar shot 57 to set the record for lowest number of rounds in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event. Aldrich Potgieter shot 59 that weekend in Colombia. In total, there have been 13 sub-60 rounds in the history of the Korn Ferry Tour, with Capan’s round being the latest.
