Unified ultralightweight champion Josh Taylor has written to the World Boxing Association (WBA) explaining why he vacated their title.
Earlier in the week, there appeared to be confusion over whether the 31-year-old had been stripped of the belt or if he had been awarded the belt.
In the letter, Taylor wrote: “I have been a proud WBA champion since 2019 when I beat Regis Prograis. Unfortunately, due to my upcoming wedding and honeymoon this summer, I am unable to fulfill my mandatory obligations and protect Alberto Puello in time.
“I didn’t want to deal with a fellow boxer who was fulfilling his own career dream and for that reason, I had to respectfully leave the team. I wish the best for the fighters who will be competing for the vacant title and look forward to being a WBA champion again in the future. ”
The disclosure of the reason on social media prompted the Scot to respond to the WBA’s tweet saying, “And you will. Vacated, not stripped. Happy weekend.”
