Twenty-six wins. Twenty-four by knockout. The main title belts in the three divisions. Gervonta Davis is undoubtedly one of the most interesting and talented boxers in the boxing world today. This Saturday in Brooklyn, the twenty-seven-year-old Baltimore native will book his WBA lightweight title when he faces tough performer Rolando Romero in a scheduled twelve round. Although twenty-six-year-old Romero is entering the ring as a glaring underdog this weekend, his career record of twelve knockouts of fourteen wins and none Losing is remarkable. All it takes in boxing is a punch.
A lot has been going on in Davis’ life lately, as he prepares to leave Mayweather Promotions after this weekend’s bout.
“I feel like it’s my career,” Davis recently said Showtimes Brian Custer, “so I felt like I needed to be the one in control of my career. And the time has come. “Perhaps Davis, who has the unique ability to gather in large crowds wherever he fights (Saturday’s fight will break the Barclay Center record for boxing appearances) want to face some of the bigger names in legal super fights.
While today’s “big” matches are often extremely difficult, Davis’s pit against the likes of Vasyl Lomachenko, Devin Haney, George Kambosos, Teofimo Lopez, or even Ryan Garcia would be an impossible event. ignore for fans. First, though, Davis had to get the outspoken Romero, who had a remarkable (to put it mildly) remarkable self for several months. The fight with Davis is said to have happened last December, but sexual assault allegations against Romero caused the match to derail for obvious reasons. The accusations were eventually dropped, leading to the Davis fight becoming a reality. The event will be broadcast on Pay Per View through Showtime and Premier Boxing Champions.
The question now is whether Romero can beat the cool and incredibly skilled Davis. He certainly has power. He also has the advantage of size. In the end, Davis was not always dominant. However, Romero had never faced a boxer of Davis’ caliber before. He is definitely facing the biggest challenge of his career. In short, Davis is the favorite in this fight for good reason. With that said, shuffling is certainly not unheard of in boxing. Arguably the sport’s biggest star, Canelo Alvarez, was usurped by Dmitry Bivol just a few weeks ago. Again, though, Davis is the favorite here for a reason.
