You won’t find much performance in the world of compact crossovers. Sure, you have exceptions like Hyundai Kona WOMEN and Mazda CX-5 Turbo. But for the most part, a lot of the offerings in the segment could be described as underpowered or slow. Jeep could change that in 2023, as it can put a new turbocharged engine in the Compass, creating one of the most powerful crossovers in the segment.

Right now, the most power you can get from the Compass is from the 2.4-liter I4 with 180 hp. Even if you drop nearly $40,000 for a fully loaded Compass High Altitude, you’ll still only have 180 HP. Other Compass versions are made with a 177 hp version of the same engine.

Dodge introduces new car giant hornet crossovers have changed everything, though. It gave Jeep access to the Hornet’s 2.0-liter turbocharged I4. One certification app Car hybrid found on the EPA’s website confirm this new engine for 2023. Looks like Alfa Romeo doesn’t use it for the Hornet clone, Alfa Romeo Tonale unleashed this engine for the Compass.

With a displacement of 2.0 liters, it is turbocharged and makes 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. If you are counting, that means Compass is going from 90 to 100 HP. Jeep has yet to release details on the ’23 Compass, but I assume this engine will be offered on higher trims of the crossover. Or they can surprise us and offer engines across the entire lineup.

I’ve reached out to Jeep to confirm that Compass will use this engine for the 2023 model year. I’ll update this when they get back to me.
