Everything you need to know about the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N 2024


Hyundai’s N Performance division unveiled its first electric vehicle at the Goodwood Festival of Speed ​​2023.

The Ioniq 5 N has an 800V electrical architecture and a maximum DC charging rate of 350kW. Hyundai claims that when plugged into a 350kW DC fast charger, the Ioniq 5 N can charge from 10 to 80% in 18 minutes.

Features and performance modes

In addition to the dual electric motor powertrain, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has a number of different modes and functions that allow it to fit into the three pillars of the Hyundai N – it’s a ‘villain’, capable of road racing, and yet also an ‘daily supercar’.

There’s an electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential, specially tuned power steering, enhanced battery thermal management, battery cooler, launch control and drift mode.

The Ioniq 5 N also features a battery preconditioning function that optimizes battery cells for ‘Pull’ or ‘Track’ driving, as well as a N Race mode that allows owners to choose between ‘Endurance’ modes or ‘Sprint’.

Hyundai N has supplied the Ioniq 5 N with a so-called N Active Sound that is designed to provide “futuristic EV sound as well as ICE-like engine and exhaust sounds”. There are various themes, with sound coming from a 10-speaker sound system – eight of these are internal, the other two external.

This active sound is paired with an N e-shift function that simulates an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission with artificial jerks between gears.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N comes with the “most powerful” brakes the company has ever offered in a vehicle. There are four-piston brake calipers at the front and single-piston calipers at the rear.

Hyundai also has a specially designed N Brake Regen function, which provides up to 0.6G of deceleration force through regenerative braking alone. Even with ABS activated, regenerative braking can still provide a maximum deceleration force of 0.2G.

The company claims there’s a “smooth transition” between the N Brake Regen and the hydraulic brake “that the driver doesn’t notice”.

External design

On the outside, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is 80 mm longer, 50 mm wider and 20 mm lower than the regular Ioniq 5.

At the front, there are active spoilers, a front splitter and the new striking color wheels of Hyundai N, Luminous Orange.

The Ioniq 5 N rides on massive 21-inch forged aluminum wheels wrapped in 275/35 R21 Pirelli P-Zero tyres.

At the rear, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has a prominent rear spoiler that integrates a triangular third brake light. There’s also a rear diffuser with orange accents and an air vent.

Another exterior feature that the Ioniq 5 N receives is the rear window wipers, which the regular Ioniq 5 does not have.

Ioniq 5 N has a total of 10 exterior paint colors. These include:

Interior design

Inside the Ioniq 5 N is a redesigned steering wheel with N buttons on the sides, which can be configured to activate specific driving modes. The N Grin Boost button is also on the steering wheel.

Another highlight of the interior of the Ioniq 5 N is the fixed center console, which features knee pads and shin guards, which have been optimized for race-track driving.

There’s also a sliding armrest, cup holders, USB-C port and wireless charger on the center console.

The Ioniq 5 N has a front bucket seat that’s 20mm lower than the regular model’s seat and has reinforced padding. They are finished in a two-tone black and Performance blue design.

As noted above, a spokesperson for Hyundai Australia has confirmed the Ioniq 5 N will launch locally in the first half of 2024.

At this stage, it is not clear what the selling price of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N will be. The current top-spec Ioniq 5 Epiq starts at $84,981 before on-road costs. The related Kia EV6 GT starts at $99,950 before going on sale.

Once the Ioniq 5 N goes on sale locally, it will likely be the most expensive model Hyundai has ever offered locally.
