Update day! We all love Update Day, right? Every Wednesday, we all love to shop for Best Wii game when the Wii Shopping Channel is updated with new games to buy. And, of course, that was the origin of the sketch comedy group Nirvana The Band The Showmini skit about surfing the Wii Shopping Channel and singing along. Refresh your memory if you will:
Since November 2020, a person named Quinn has been running a Twitter account called “Wii Shop Wednesday”, which posts sketches every Wednesday, accompanied by “Wii Shop Wednesday Wisdom”, an additional tweet conveying words of wisdom to its followers. Words of wisdom like these:
As of January 17, the account will be permanently closed, meaning those of us looking forward to the song on Wednesday (along with other similar accounts, like second mermaid, Thursday… what a conceptand Daniel Craig said “Ladies and Gentlemen… weekend“), we will have to rely on “It’s my Dudes Wednesday” instead of, replace.
We messaged Quinn directly to find out why Wednesday’s Wii Store will be closed forever. “To be completely honest,” they said, “what got me off-limits was the suspension of Out Of Touch on Thursday.” This is a Twitter account that published a clip from the Lucky Star anime, with the characters dancing to Hall & Oates’ “Out of Touch”, but was hit by a copyright strike at the end of 2022 and forced to remove all of it. all posts containing the song (although they later continued to post it).
“[Out Of Touch Thursday’s] The suspension was shocking enough to make me re-evaluate why I run this account,” Quinn told us, “and it made me realize a kind of rift had grown between me and the audience. Band the Show, and especially creator Matt Johnson (he’s the one who didn’t sing the song in the sketch) for which the account was created in the first place, Quinn said, “[but] I realize that most account followers don’t care about that.”
But even if most people only know this one sketch from Nirvana the Band, or indeed Nirvana the Band the Show, Quinn finds joy in the account, especially when it comes to the Wii Shop Wednesday Wisdom . Unlike many weekly funny Twitter accounts, Wii Store Wednesday doesn’t schedule its tweets – it’s all Quinn’s.
“In the early days of the account, I really put in a lot of effort and made interesting variations to the video, but for whatever reason that just pissed people off,” Quinn said. “Then I decided it would be fun if every week I included a little life advice, song lyrics, or movie quote that I had in mind, mostly for entertainment purposes. Even when I became disillusioned, it never felt like work, because it only took five minutes, once a week.”
And for those of you wondering – Wednesday’s Wii Shop’s 47,900 followers might seem like a boon, but it doesn’t translate to a personal gain for Quinn. “This interview is probably the closest I’ve had to “”mainstream success,”” Quinn told us. “The main thing that kept me going was the desire to have more viewers. Nirvan(n)a The Band The Show. It’s heartbreaking not to know that yet, and I feel as though if only one person were inspired to see the film (through whatever means necessary), then I’d have done my job.”
