BEIJING – Another major Chinese city has tightened Covid restrictions as the country struggles to contain a nationwide outbreak that stretches from Shanghai in the southeast to the northern provinces.
The southern city of Guangzhou has closed face-to-face classes at primary and junior high schools since Monday, moving courses online. The measures will last at least a week, according to a city announcement over the weekend.
The city government said locals should not leave the city unless absolutely necessary, and would need to have tested negative for the virus within the past 48 hours to do so.
Guangzhou – the capital of Guangdong, a manufacturing-heavy province – reported 27 new Covid cases on Sunday, including nine asymptomatic. This is up from a total of 11 cases a day earlier, according to the National Health Commission.
