Former Barbaro Vet Richardson Injured
Dr. Dean Richardson, who was the vet for the 2006 Kentucky Derby presented by Yum! Brand winner Barbaro, was injured in an April 10 riding accident in Pennsylvania. He underwent surgery April 12 at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. Richardson is the Charles W. Raker Professor of Equine Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center.
Many students, former and current residents, veterinarians, trainers and equestrians have reached out to express their love for Richardson and their deep appreciation for the way he has touched into their lives. The entire Penn Vet community remains optimistic and hopeful as Richardson begins to recover. We are doing our best to support Richardson and his family and will share updates as appropriate.
Richardson led care for Barbaro after the horse broke his leg during the Preakness Stakes two weeks after his Derby win. Barbaro’s injury eventually led to his death when he developed meningitis in three of his hooves.
