Sure, the 85mm f/1.2 has a three-stop advantage over the 70-200mm f/4, but if you’re working in a studio with strobe lights, it’s probably pretty rare that you’ll use such a wide aperture; in fact, you can stay around f/8 for most photos. As such, you can appreciate the additional versatility of the zoom. And more importantly, you’ll also appreciate the fact that the 70-200mm f/4 is $1,000 cheaper than the 85mm f/1.2. That being said, if you love that famous Canon f/1.2 look, or if you plan to shoot outside the studio in low light, you might appreciate that wider aperture.
