Emerald announced 23 stakes worth $1,240,000 in wallets for the 2023 live racing season that begins May 6.
The 88th run of the $150,000 Longacres Mile bet on August 13 with the quadruple title features a $50,000 Emerald Distaff, a $50,000 Muckleshoot Derby and a $50,000 Washington Oaks. The track’s flagship event for ages 3 and up, the Longacres Mile was hosted in 2022 by KD Purebred Slew’s Tiz Whiz via Lusk Racing’s Papa’s Golden Boy when the Washington hybrids took the top two spots.
The Older Horse Division starts with $50,000 Budweiser Stakes (six long feathers) on June 25, followed by $50,000 in Governor’s stake (6 1/2 feathers) on July 23. and the Longacres Mile.
The 2023 staking schedule features eight double title bets, a quadruple title on Sunday, August 13, and a triple title on the end of September 17, including a $70,000 Gottstein Futurity la for the top 2 year olds of the Northwest.
The $50,000 Seattle stake for 3-year-old pups and $50,000 Auburn bet for 3-year-old ponies and ponies start staking action on June 18.
Seven stakes were offered to 2-year-olds — three each for the sharks, ponies, and colts — finishing with the Gottstein Futurity at 1/16 mile.
Washington Cup has four stakes—$50,000 Washington Cup Colts & Geldings and $50,000 Washington Cup for Teens on August 27, and $50,000 Muckleshoot Tribal Classic and $50,000 Washington Cup Fillies & Mares on September 17. The 2-year-old Washington Cup races are restricted to Washington crosses while the older events are open to Washington and British Columbia crosses.
In addition to the 21 thoroughbred bets, Emerald Downs offers two bets on precious horses—the $30,000 Juvenile Challenge Championship for 2-year-olds and the 14th run of the Championship Challenge $40,000 worth of emeralds for kids 3 and up.
The opening date of the 2023 season is Saturday, May 6, coinciding with the 149th Kentucky Derby. The 52-day meeting ends on September 17.
