Nyquist Colt Tops Day 2 at F-T Midlantic at $205,000


The closing session of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall Yearlings Sale Oct. 3 concluded with a slight decline over the previous year in all market indices. The day was headlined by a Nyquist   colt, Hip 160, commanding a final bid of $205,000 from Thorostock and Seth Morris Thoroughbreds.

The colt is a full sibling to 2023 U.A.E. Oaks (G3) placed Asawer  and Discover Stakes (G3) placed Monday Morning Qb , by Imagining . Becky Davis, agent, consigned the Maryland-bred for breeders Bowman and Higgins Stable as Hip 160.

The colt is out of the winning Not For Love mare How My Heart Works, a half sibling to two grade 3 placed runners in First Mondays , by Curlin   and Awesome Flower , dam of multiple grade 1 winner Cyberknife   and stakes-placed Tapit Shoes .

Under the third dam, Well Dressed, is the impressive Goodwood Stakes (G1) and Dubai World Cup (G1) winner Well Armed , a son of Tiznow who earned more than $5.179 million for owner/breeder WinStar Farm.

During Tuesday’s session, Fasig-Tipton reported 191 yearlings sold of the 255 to go under the hammer for a turnover of $4,719,000, down 20% year-on-year. The average price decreased 5.7% to $24,707 and the median to $12,000, down 20%. The 64 horses who failed to attain their reserve represent an RNA rate of 25.1%.

In 2022, Day 2 saw 241 horses traded of the 287 on offer for a gross of $6,319,200, at an average price of $26,221 and a $15,000 median. The RNA rate of 16% represents the 46 yearlings who did not sell.

The past two days saw 290 yearlings sell of the 368 to go through the ring for a turnover of $7,082,000, posting a 30.7% decline from 2022, suitable for a $24,421 average and a median of $12,000, dipping 7.8% and 20%, respectively. The 82 yearlings who did not sell represent an RNA rate of 22.3%.

During last year’s two-day sale, 386 horses of the 465 on offer were traded for a $10,226,200 gross, good for a $26,596 average and a median of $15,000. A total of 79 horses failed to meet their reserve, representing a 17% RNA rate.

Over the past two days, Thorostock and Seth Morris Thoroughbreds purchased six head for a gross of $520,000, at an average of $86,667 to be the sale’s leading buyer. Becky Davis sold 25 of her 28-yearling draft for a gross of $1,005,000 and an average of $40,200 to be the leading consignor.

Fasig-Tipton will head to Saratoga Springs, N.Y., for the Saratoga Fall Mixed Sale Oct. 17, followed by the Kentucky October Yearlings Sale in Lexington Oct. 23-26.
