Do landscape photographers need Photoshop anymore?
It may have been an absurd thing to ponder, but will there finally be a day when landscape photographers don’t really need to use Photoshop?
Over the past year or so, I’ve repeatedly said that Lightroom’s ongoing updates and new features have greatly added to it as a standalone editing platform. Whether it’s the extremely precise selection tools that now incorporate aspects of AI or the evolution of masking capabilities, Lightroom has certainly become a very powerful editing tool in its own right. it, to the point where I now find myself spending more time in Lightroom, which is something I didn’t until about 18 months ago, because I’ve always immediately started using Photoshop. But has Lightroom gone so far as to be able to completely replace Photoshop and perhaps make it redundant?
That question brings us to this great video by Alistair Benn from Expressive Photography, in which he looks at whether landscape photographers need to switch from Lightroom to Photoshop to edit their images. Benn is a very talented landscape photographer who talks a lot about Lightroom and Photoshop, so it’s well worth watching this video. As for me, I will continue to use Photoshop because I love using multiple layers in my edits, as well as using Actions, many of which I created myself over the years. Benn leans towards sticking to Photoshop for other reasons. How do you feel? Is Adobe crowding out Photoshop by making Lightroom better?
