Is film photography better than digital?
The age-old question resurfaces: is film better than digital? In this video, the winner is crowned once and for all.
There are certainly pros and cons to film and digital. Film has a certain materiality that cannot be reproduced digitally. The “film look” is a very real thing, and new photographers spend a lot of money trying to recreate it digitally. For things like certain colors or tones, that should be enough but replicating the grain is a whole other story. And don’t let me start taking a sharp digital image and make it blurry or worse, intentionally capture it blurry.
In addition, digital has a certain degree of cleanliness that film can never achieve. This quality works well in tandem with digital’s ability to take multiple shots quickly and get the best moments in one pose.
In his video, Luke Cleland provide more in-depth insights into his interests. There are definitely pros and cons to both and I won’t spoil the video any more by covering them here. In the end, the only thing that matters is the final image. Your personal choices for your images will dictate whether you use a film or digital camera — or possibly if you’re using an alternative process like blue style then no camera at all?
