White privilege is one of the most pressing problems in the modern working world. But does that extend to photography? Unfortunately that’s true. Here’s what a famous white male photographer had to say on the matter.

The world is becoming more and more aware of the multitude of disadvantages that people of color face when trying to get equal opportunities in their careers. This applies to both women as well as other groups of people. In short, if you are not a white male over 30 with a native accent, you may face disadvantages in one way or another. In his thought-provoking videoScott talks about the advantages, sometimes unfair, that he has because of the way he was born.

I can strongly relate to this. While I am a white male, I was not born a native English speaker, and if you talk to me long enough you will realize that I am not a native speaker. On top of that, I’m not even 30, close to 20. These factors, while nowhere near some of what an aspiring female photographer would face, still kept me from doing certain things. . In fact, some people have told me over and over again not to hold workshops or train photographers because of my young age and the stereotypes surrounding it. It’s funny, it’s never the people who attend my sessions, but the other people who run them.
