The emergence of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, has introduced a range of vocabulary to the public, from “fomite” to “social distancing.” See ours guidance from 2020.
And now there’s a new one report from the World Health Organization proposed a new set of terms and definitions – along with a revised way of thinking about airborne pathogens.
Jeremy Farrar, WHO’s chief scientist, sees the document as a kind of baseline. With a shared vocabulary and approach, he and his colleagues are trying to get public health experts on the same page to reduce confusion and streamline future infection prevention. .
This is necessary because the transmission is very complex. “It depends on my immunity,” Farrar said. It depends on your immunity.” “It depends on the humidity. It depends on the size of the room. It depends on the airflow. It depends on whether I’ve been vaccinated or whether I’m immune or not. Depends my age. Depends on whether I have diabetes or not.” or I have other conditions. It’s very complicated.”
NPR has prepared a quiz to test your knowledge of this new thinking—and how WHO hopes it will be used.
