Devoted developers reveal new “Sekiro-inspired” game Nine Sols

Remember when Thoroughness Did the Red Candle developers show off a small snippet of a beautiful 2D game they made earlier this year? They didn’t have much to say about it at the time, but last night they justifiably announced it. Named Nine Sols, it is an action platformer with combat inspired by Sekiro. Honestly, they still don’t have much to say about it yet, but they did release a gorgeous poster featuring a cat-like character that you can check out in full below.

“WIP title Nine Sols, a lore-rich hand-drawn 2D action platformer with Sekiro-inspired deflection-focused combat,” the developers tweeted. “Embark on a fantasy journey through Asia, exploring a land once home to an ancient race of aliens and following a vengeful hero’s quest to destroy the 9 Sols, rulers of a… The kingdom is destroyed.”

Perhaps this little cat is our main character.

When I first saw that photo, I mainly focused on the cute character, the pretty butterfly (bird?) and the lovely sunset reflected on the water there. But then I noticed that actually, I think water is blood. The blood probably came from anyone who owned the kitten’s lower limbs.

It’s currently unclear if Nine Sols will have any horror aspects (you know, aside from the bloodbath), although it’s not exactly a surprise given Red Candle’s experience with the genre. However, it certainly looks and feels more like a fierce platforming adventure. Here’s the short clip they revealed back in March as a reminder:

As the devs mentioned, the game is a work in progress, so it’s still too early to say when we’ll be able to see more. Here’s hoping the developers will have more clips to show in the new year.

Nine Sols looks like a pretty big departure from Red Candle’s existing portfolio, which includes the popular (and controversial) game Devotion. It was withdrawn from stores shortly after its release in 2019 because it included a reference compare Chinese President Xi Jinping to Winnie the Pooh. Last year, GOG said they would release it but changed their mind. Finally this year Red Candle started selling it on their own digital store.
