Nothing is loved by the gaming community more than someone finding a ‘cursed copy’ of a favorite childhood game or a way to visit a secret world within the game universe.

The Mario franchise is the source of many myths and secrets, including Paper Mario mystery serial code And The elusive world of Minus.

There are several other stories, with varying degrees of truth to them. Some are instances of the Mandela effect, some have been confirmed by Nintendo, and others are completely false.

So here are eight of our favorite Mario urban legends – from the sublime to the ridiculous through the outright untrue…

Mario Myth #1 – Mario Characters Are Actors (Entire Franchise)

To begin with, a common theory is that all Mario characters are actually actors in a play.

This makes sense. There are some visual nods to the idea in some games. Super Mario Bros. 3 looks like a play, with props bolted to the background and the theater curtain opening during the intro.

Also, why was Bowser trying to stop Mario from following him during the Super Mario Bros. but then totally happy to play tennis with him?

Really? Well, this theory has been confirmed by Nintendo. In a 2012 interview with Game Info, Shigeru Miyamoto noted that he considers the Mario characters to be like a larger family or “a group of actors”. Then he confirmed that all the world (Super Mario) is a stage on Twitter.

Some even believe that seeing the Wario Apparition can cause physical harm.

Really? It’s a great story, but it’s nothing more than that.

The image above is one of the commonly used images next to the story and it comes from a video used in an E3 . presentation in 1996. There are other images and videos related to the story (and even a piece of music) but all of them are of dubious origin.

Mario Legends #3 – Anti-Piracy Monitor (Older Mario Games)

“I don’t serve criminals.”

This one is a bit more extensive, but if you’ve scoured any creepypasta forums online, you might have stumbled across some weird anti-piracy screens that can appear in video games old.

Are these real? While games can certainly contain interesting anti-piracy measures, the vast majority of popular anti-piracy displays are fake. This is a word Mario Party DS:

And!? After searching in the game files, Girrtacos managed to find some pictures. Technically, there are four creatures, although one is hidden by cliffs. The Creature’s name ‘Hell Valley Sky Tree’ comes from the filename.

There is no clear explanation for these creatures. Fans are still theorizing about them to this day, with some players thinking they’re just part of a scrapped area and others insisting they’re demons, based on the filenames.
