Daihatsu Atrai deck camper started as a kei delivery truck because the Japanese narrow streets. It’s a remarkable vehicle for being the only one vans there are four doors and a truck-like bed in the back. Not only that, the two rear doors are sliding, the tailgate folds open 180 degrees.
Normally, this might seem like a bump to fridge repairmen or grandfather clocks, but Daihatsu considers this the perfect camping car. The rooftop canopy appears to open and fold outward in a shape that mimics the boots added along the bed. Additional exploration gear comes in the form of a hunter stand at the top of the tent shell, an LED light bar and what appear to be two pairs of extra lights in a custom-made front fender.
Daihatsu is building four other vehicles for Auto Salon. One is a more luxurious version of the fully enclosed Atrai van, fitted with a grille on par with the new Silverado. Another Daihatsu HiJet kei truck is described as an assembly experience truck for the Copen roadster. While we only have one cartoon illustration at the moment, it looks like you should be able to create the nose of a Copen on a truck bed.
Last but not least, Daihatsu is releasing two variations of the revived Daihatsu Rocky. Gen X readers might remember that name from Suzuki The samurai-esque off-roader was briefly sold in the US from 1988-92. Unlike their body-on-frame predecessors, the new Rockys are compact unibody models. The cars on display depict a luxury version and an off-road version.
If Daihatsu returns to the US market, Rocky will probably sell well in the US, but the real MVP will be Atrai Deck Camper.
