An all-new base model Porsche 718 Boxster may cost more than $70,000, but the biggest downside isn’t the price. It’s about driving one and realizing that it’s totally worth the money and you can no longer tell yourself that it’s hyped and overpriced. The Boxster is really good. However, for the 981 generation of the Boxster, Porsche went above and beyond to create one of the most desirable cars possible — Porsche Boxster Spyder 2016. And now there is one was sold on Cars & Bid.
If you’re just getting acquainted with the 987 generation Boxster Spyder, it’s understandable if you’re confused. That version was cool enough but had only a slight increase in horsepower over the Boxster S. For the 981, Porsche did something that many thought would never happen: equip the Boxster Spyder with the same engine as the You get it on the 911 Carrera S.
So, in addition to other weight-saving measures that keep the weight down to about 2,900 pounds, power also jumps to 375 horsepower and 309 pound-feet of torque. Unlike the mechanically similar Cayman GT4, the 981 Boxster Spyder doesn’t have the same suspension as the 911 GT3, which means it’s much easier to use on public roads. You still get the steering rack from the 911 Turbo S and upgraded brakes to handle the extra power.
The 981 Boxster Spyder was also only sold with a manual transmission and only 2,500 were produced worldwide, meaning this car is not only special but also quite rare. If you can afford it, you certainly won’t be disappointed. After all, it’s a Boxster with an engine from a 911. What’s not to like?
Just make sure you live somewhere where it rarely rains or have a few other cars to drive in bad weather because you definitely don’t want to be caught in a thunderstorm with the top down. Let’s just say that placing an order on top is probably not something you want to learn how to do quickly.
