Crazy WorldSBK Finals Interrupted at Mandalika
MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship 2023
Round Two – Mandalika, Indonesia
WorldSBK Second race
The track temperature had risen to 53 degrees by the time of the second race at Mandalika on Sunday afternoon. Most front runners chose Pirelli SC2 front and SC0 rear.
Bautista had to start from tenth on the grid after being relegated in the Superpole race but rose to eighth in round one. Up front, it was Superpole race winner Toprak Razgatlioglu leading his Pata Yamaha teammate Andrea Locatelli and trailed in seventh place by Jonathan Rea, Axel Bassani, Alex Lowes, Xavi Vierge and Michael Rinaldi. .
Bautista ran wide in the second round in the second round but lost only one place. Andrea Locatelli took the lead a few turns later, and when that door was opened, Locatelli was followed by Rea, Lowes and Rinaldi, all of whom overtook Razgatlioglu to put Turk back in fifth. Bassani actually overtook Razgatlioglu on his way and that’s what allowed the other drivers to pass as well.
Bassani then took the lead after sliding inside Locatelli during a change of direction, sending the Yamaha man long and sliding all the way down to seventh as he returned to speed up the track.
Michael Rinaldi is making progress, edging past Lowes for fourth, then edging past Rea for second and taking a 1-2 lead on Ducati. One round later, Rinaldi led Bassani.
With 16 laps to the second, Axel Bassani was asked to drop one position by the manager for irresponsible riding. Bassani looked over his shoulder then opened the door for Lowes to pass but Toprak Razgatlioglu also slipped past and helped the Ducati man to his feet as he did so.
Toprak Razgatlioglu then took second place from Alex Lowes but in round 15, Michael Rinaldi led by two seconds. Alex Lowes had to dodge action to not run into the back of Toprak causing the KRT man to lose some positions.
Jonathan Rea then slips inside Bassani and runs so wide that he runs wide himself, which allows Xavi Vierge not only to overtake Bassani but almost himself.
Bautista kept moving forward and with 15 laps the defending champion rose to sixth place.
Danilo Petrucci plunged his Ducati inside Michael van der Mark and pushed him wide to take ninth place from the BMW man, who was then pushed further back by Iker Lecuona.
Xavi Vierge then overtook Jonathan Rea for third place.
Michael van der Mark had a huge run at 11th, which also knocked Peter Oettl out.
Alvaro Bautista then took fourth place from Jonathan Rea with a move inside and trailed behind Xavi Vierge.
Scott Redding was running in eighth but then fell behind and low when trying to take seventh from Locatelli.
The red flag then appeared to interrupt the proceedings with 14 laps still running. The action had been non-stop for the previous few rounds so I’m not surprised the officials cried ‘enough’.
Michael Rinaldi was leading Toprak Razgatlioglu by 2.4 seconds when the race was paused. Xavi Vierge was third, Alvaro Bautista fourth and Jonathan Rea fifth. Remy Gardner ranked 11th.

WorldSBK race two part two
The track temperature rose further to 55 degrees before restarting 14 laps. Andrea Locatelli, Axel Bassani, Xavi Vierge, Michael Rinaldi and Scott Redding picked SCX-A behind while the rest of the top 10 started behind SC0. The only riders in the top 10 who did not choose the SC2 front were Alvaro Bautista and Michael Rinaldi, the Aruba Ducati couple chose the SC1 front.
Toprak Razgatlioglu had a great run but Michael Rinaldi still led in the first leg while Alvaro Bautista finished third ahead of Xavi Vierge, Axel Bassani and Jonathan Rea. Bassani lost fifth place to Rea in the opening round.
Rinaldi immediately began building a solid lead while Razgatlioglu tried to keep Bautista at bay. Bautista eventually overcame Turk with 11 laps.
The defending world champion then started chasing his teammates. Shortened the distance to seven tenths with seven laps to run but then he ran wide and lost to his teammate by another second.
Jonathan Rea was running in fifth place behind Xavi Vierge but the Northern Irishman was then knocked out in the seventh round.
Bautista hunted down Rinaldi again and with four laps to run he overtook his teammate, behind the Spaniard’s SC0 with more life than the lighter SCX-A on the car. Italian Panigale V4 R. Bautista could afford to wait his time, knowing he was up to speed to make his move at a safe opportunity. He waited two laps before trailing and then took the lead before immediately taking the lead.
In the final game, Bautista led Rinaldi by six-tenths. Toprak Razgatlioglu was in third place ahead of Xavi Vierge, Andrea Locatelli and Danilo Petrucci as Remy Gardner edged past Axel Bassani for seventh place.
In that final lap, Michael Rinaldi ran wide in pursuit of Bautista and was dropped to fourth when Razgatlioglu and Vierge passed without a hitch.
Bautisa was the winner, Razgatlioglu came second and Vierge stepped onto the podium ahead of Rinaldi, Locatelli, Petrucci and Remy Gardner scoring nine points for his seventh place.
Bautista left Indonesia with a 37-point lead over Razgatlioglu, whose teammate Pata Yamaha was five points behind.
Michael van der Mark was diagnosed with a fracture of the base of the middle knuckles of the fourth and fifth fingers on his left hand while Jonathan Rea suffered a deep scratch on his right thigh.
The Championship currently has a six-week break before convening again in Assen over the weekend of April 23.
