The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday said the first known case of omicron Covid in the US was detected in a person who had traveled internationally and started showing symptoms on May 15. 11.

The new infection timeline means omicrons arrived in the US earlier than first thought. California reported its first confirmed case on December 1. An international traveler returning to San Francisco from South Africa on November 22 developed symptoms three days later, and tested positive on November 29.

The CDC says 22 states have confirmed at least one omicron case, and some of those cases suggest community transmission is underway. Of the 43 patients taking omicron Covid, 33% reported having traveled internationally in the 14 days prior to symptom onset or testing positive, according to the CDC.

Case investigations have identified exposures linked to international and domestic travel, major public events, and family transmission.

According to the CDC, one vaccinated person has been hospitalized for two days, but there have not been any deaths reported so far among the patients being monitored by health officials.

Of the cases, 58% of the patients were 18 to 39 years old, and 79% had been fully vaccinated at least 14 days before the onset of symptoms or tested positive. According to the CDC, 14 people have received the booster dose and 6 have recovered from previous episodes of Covid infections. Five people received their booster dose less than 14 days before the onset of symptoms.

The most commonly reported symptoms were cough, fatigue and nasal congestion, or runny nose.

“Many of the first reported omicron variant infections appear to be mild, although as with all variants there is a disparity between the infection and the more severe outcome, and symptoms are expected to milder in vaccinated individuals and those with prior SARS-CoV, the CDC said in its weekly Mortality and Mortality report on Friday.

The World Health Organization says the omicron variant appears to be more contagious than the dominant delta variant, although more data is needed for a definitive answer. The primary White House medical adviser, Dr Anthony Fauci, said initial reports of mild symptoms were encouraging, although more data is needed to determine the possible severity of the outcome. health fruit.

The UK’s Health Security Agency warned on Wednesday that the spread of the omicron variant was widening, overshadowing the previous delta variant. Health Secretary Sajid Javid tells British lawmakers that omicron infections in the UK can reach 1 million by the end of the year.
