It’s no secret that smartphones have destroyed the camera industry over the past decade, but according to Canon, the market may have finally bottomed out and now there may be a reason to look. Turns out even DSLRs aren’t dead yet.
Canon recently released Financial statements for the second quarter of 2022, and in that, there seems to be some good news. In the report, the company says that the overall camera market has:
… mostly bottomed out at current size. In the future, we expect the professional and high-end amateur segment to expand further and the products to become more developed. Accordingly, we expect the overall market to grow from now on.
This is certainly great news, as demand has fallen deeply and often for a long time, and some worry that it will fall too low to fundamentally reshape the industry. While smartphones have reached a fairly premium level, it seems Canon sees them as a gateway to higher-end equipment for many users. Other brands have expressed similar thinking over the last few years, as we’ve seen more and more entry-level products focused on integrating social media features and increasing content creation. ready to post easier.
Furthermore, Canon says it will continue to supply DSLRs for as long as there is demand. It is important to distinguish this from saying that new DSLR cameras will be developed and released.
