The dog that fell at the rescue was deaf and couldn’t walk, now it has found a permanent family
Despite a tornado alarm being issued to the area, the previous owner of the Razz decided to leave it near the outdoor kennels at the Richland County Dog Shelter.
One-year-old Pittie was deaf, could not walk, and left everything. But now, the tide has turned, and not only is he able to walk again, but he has found a forever loving family of his own.
When Razz first arrived at the Richland County Dog House in May, he was completely motionless, and no one understood why. Veterinarians at Phillips Animal Hospital examined him and even consulted with other veterinarians. Plus, he attended weekly acupuncture and laser appointments with Dr. Cheryl Becker at the Mohican Veterinary Health Clinic. But the cause never became clear.
Not only is it a mystery why he couldn’t walk in the first place, but the reason for his improvement is still unclear. While they have yet to pinpoint the exact reason why he was unable to walk when he first arrived, they are not sure why his condition has gradually improved. They weren’t sure if it was the acupuncture appointments, the steroid medication he was taking, the passage of time, or something else entirely. However, his condition continued to improve.
It was when he attended his weekly appointments at the acupuncture center that his new mother met and fell in love with him for the first time. Bethany Higgins, Razz’s new mom, is the veterinary assistant there. Despite the fact that Razz is loved by everyone who meets him, there is a special connection between the two.
“I fell in love with him from the first time I met him, but so does everyone. We had a pretty special bond from the start, and everyone could see that. Bethany shares so much that it is hard to deny it.
The same is felt between Razz and his new human sister, six-year-old Amelia (Bethany’s daughter). They met at Mohican’s open house at the end of May, and they also had an instant connection.
Now that Razz has left the shelter, his condition continues to improve. Not only did he walk more easily, but he also gained healthy weight, and the muscles that atrophied from not being used were also filled and toned again.
Since Razz is a special needs person, it makes perfect sense to team up with a veterinarian technician with a hobby of investing in deaf dogs. Bethany shares that she’s always wanted a deaf dog, and in college she even studied interpreting and wrote an article about using sign language with dogs. She has successfully taught Razz some notation.
