Submissions are now being accepted for the 2023 edition of Underwater Photographer of the Year. This year’s competition has 13 categories, including Macro, Wide Angle, Behavior, Wreck and Conservation, along with the usual special categories for photographs taken in British waters. Alex Mustard and Peter Rowlands reprise their roles as judges, but this time Martin Edge passes his judging wig to award-winning underwater shooter Tobias Friedrich.

Can you be the Underwater Photographer of the Year 2023?

The search is ongoing for the world’s best underwater photos. UPY – Underwater Photographer of the Year 2023 competition began accepting entries on November 1, ending January 7, 2023. The contest is considered by many to be the premier underwater photography competition. around the world, attracting thousands of entries, with the winners presented around the world following mainstream media trends. The previous prize went to Rafael Fernandez Caballero for his nighttime photograph of whale sharks “Giants Of The Night”.

Jury President Alex Mustard said “the previous edition of UPY taught us that travel restrictions may have prevented many photographers from visiting their favorite waters, but it did not hinder the their creativity. Our participants showed us how diverse underwater photos can be, from swimming pools, underwater mines, deep shipwrecks and ocean wildlife views. The past 12 months have seen tourism reopen and we’re excited to see what images have been taken, especially as photographers get back to work with their beloved subjects. .”

A new addition to the competition for 2023, exciting underwater photography equipment manufacturer Marelux has joined UPY as a dual category sponsor. Marelux is generously offering UPY’s biggest ever cash prizes to photographers who placed first, second and third in both the Wide Angle and Macro categories. Jun Ouyang from Marelux said, “We are delighted to support a contest that is highly appreciated by the underwater photography community, good luck to all photographers, we can’t wait to see what works. beautiful winning image”.

UPY is an annual competition that celebrates photography below the surface of oceans, lakes, rivers and even swimming pools. British photographer Phil Smith was the first Underwater Photographer of the Year, honored in 1965. Today the competition is truly international, with 13 categories, testing photographers against subjects such as Close-up, Wide Angle, Behavioral, Wreck and Conservation photography, as well as four categories for photographs taken specifically in British waters.

The contest incorporates a preset results system that provides feedback to photographers on how each photo has progressed throughout the competition, so everyone involved benefits from participating. The experienced jury includes photographers Peter Rowlands, Tobias Friedrich and Alex Mustard.
