Over the last 18 months, Canon has released a slew of EOS R mirrorless cameras with cropped sensors, including the R7, R10, R50 and R100. But underwater shooters have been able to make use of just one of Canon’s three lenses specifically designed for APS-C bodies: the RF-S 18–45mm f/4.5–6.3. With its 29–72mm coverage (74°–33° angle of view), it’s perfect for fish portraits and combines well with macro and wide-angle wet lenses.
Today, Canon has finally introduced an ultra-wide zoom designed for EOS R cameras with APS-C sensors—the RF-S 10–18mm f/4.5–6.3 IS STM. The 16–29mm equivalent zoom range should make it a good choice for shooting reef scenics, big animals and wrecks.
The lens features 12 elements, including two ultra-low dispersion (UD) lenses and an aspheric lens. It’s also very lightweight and compact, weighing in at just 5.3oz (150g) and measuring 1.77in (45mm) long when retracted. The lens offers image stabilization (IS), rated for 4 stops of stabilization when used on its own and up to 6 stops when combined with in-body IS. Minimum focus is 3.39in (9cm). The lens features a 49mm front filter thread.
