Sony has announced “In-camera tamper proof imaging technology” aims to protect images against fraudulent manipulation. Aimed at business users who want to ensure the authenticity of their content, the technology applies cryptographic signatures at the time of capture. Then, Sony said, “any potential pixel modification, tampering, or tampering will abort the image signature, as image manipulation will be detected by the customer’s own certificate server in the checking process.”

This technology is currently only available on a7 Mark IVand business users will need a license to enable in-camera signing. Sony didn’t provide any pricing information, but the company said it plans to offer the technology on other camera models.

Sony unlocks in-camera tamper-proof technology

August 4, 2022 – Sony today announced the availability of its in-camera tamper-proof imaging technology to enterprise business users. Using a digital signature that is processed at the time of capture, Sony technology assists in detecting any modification to the image, thus protecting the image from fraudulent use.

Following widespread issues of unauthorized editing and misconduct around digital photo data, Sony has developed standard cryptographic-based anti-tamper technology for business users to protect image from future abuse.

With Sony’s in-camera signing mode activated, images are instantly cryptographically signed by the camera processor when captured. Any potential pixel modification, tampering, or tampering will then abort the image signature, as the image manipulation will be detected by the client’s own certificate server during inspection.

Available on Alpha 7 IV cameras, with expansion to other models reviewed in sequence, this new functionality streamlines the lengthy process required from image submission to verification, all with the added benefit of security features.

The Alpha 7 IV also combines a 33.0MP full-frame back-illuminated Exmor R™ CMOS image sensor with the BIONZ XR™ imaging engine to deliver high-speed processing and outstanding resolution.

Sony’s new tamper-proof signing mode ensures the secure creation and transmission of images based on cryptographic methods, as the fundamental need for unmodified and secure image validation grows in many applications, across many industries.

The technology applies specifically to passports and ID verification, but goes even further in tackling image manipulation in the media, healthcare and law enforcement sectors. For the insurance and construction sectors, this technology will provide a secure platform to inspect and record damage.
