BUFFALO, NY — A Buffalo couple who saved a man from a historic and deadly blizzard that hit the city in December were surprised with tickets to an NFL-sponsored Super Bowl LVII.
Sha’Kyra Aughry and her boyfriend, Trent Alls Jr., brought Joey White, 64, into their home on Christmas Eve, saving him from a raging storm. The Alls go out to get him in after Aughry says they need to help White after he knocks on their door. The multi-day blizzard with more than 4 feet of snow and wind speeds of up to 70 mph with more than three dozen people died from the storm.
First responders were unable to reach Aughry and many other homes during the height of the blizzard. On Christmas Day, Aughry shared a video on Facebook about her using a hair dryer to melt the ice on White’s hand. She also asks for support to get help from White. White’s hand was blistered and swollen from fourth-degree frostbite. After Aughry and Alls cared for him for nearly two days, strangers watched the video and came to help bring White, who has a developmental disability, to the hospital.
Each Buffalo NewsWhite’s nine fingers had to be amputated. After 45 days, White was discharged from the hospital this week to continue his recovery at a local rehab facility, according to CBS.
While Aughry thought she was meeting her boss, morning CBS Aughry and Alls, a former high school football player, surprised Aughry and Alls with tickets to the Super Bowl in Glendale, Arizona on Sunday. They are also being flown out of the game.
“I’ve never done this before,” Aughry exclaims on CBS upon learning of the ticket.
A local man known as “Merry Christmas, Jay” was also surprised with tickets to the Super Bowl in January after he rescued 24 people in a deadly blizzard. Thurman Thomas and his wife, Patti, gave Jay Withey two tickets to the game on behalf of the Bills and Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul also recognized Aughry and Withey’s life-saving efforts last month.
