Returning to the roots of the survival horror genre with Alone in the Dark means creating a loyal love letter for longtime fans, but also a point of access for new players. Creating a reimagining that modern gamers will love while staying true to the original experience takes time, and we’re happy to announce that the wait is coming to an end – Alone in the Dark will release on PlayStation 5 on October 25.
The team at Pieces Interactive are die-hard Alone in the Dark fans and know exactly where to turn to reimagining the game that gave birth to a genre. Creatively led by Mikael Hedberg, writer of horror films Amnesia: The Dark Descent and SOMA, with creature designs from Guy Davis, Guillermo Del Toro’s legendary collaborator, the vision of them about Alone in the Dark being a dream (or nightmare?) come true for us.
As with any good survival horror game, we of course have tricky puzzles and clues that you need to uncover in order to find out with a twist. If you want to really exercise your investigative muscles, choose our difficulty that offers less support, or you can choose an option that offers more tips, hints, and overall guidance.
Today, we’ve fully revealed this new, nightmarish vision to the world in our Alone in the Dark Spotlight stream. Over the course of 11 tense minutes, we’ve revealed our lead talent David Harbor as Detective Edward Carnby and Jodie Comer as Emily Hartwood, giving you a peek into the gameplay and cutscenes whole new scene, and find out how the haunting Doom Jazz soundscape of the Deceto Manor has been brought to life. We also launched our playable Prologue where you can get a glimpse of the horrors that await you throughout the entire game, Today.
A new generation of classic horror
The power of modern hardware has opened up new possibilities, especially when it comes to our protagonist performance. Being able to capture more emotion on the face meant we were able to bring the two main characters, Detectives Edward Carnby (David Harbor) and Emily Hartwood (Jodie Comer) to life like never before. Whichever role you choose, you’ll experience the whole adventure through the performance of one of Hollywood’s most talented actors in their first video game role.
While Edward and Emily may experience the same overall events in Alone in the Dark, both characters will interpret their journey in different ways through their reactions to their surroundings. – and a few unique moments of the story. Each has its own strong personality and story, and the residents of Deceto will treat them in their own way.
A-list in the dark
Edward and Emily met on the same mission – to find out what happened to Jeremy Hartwood, Emily’s uncle. Be it the promise of work and professional curiosity, or finding a close relative and breaking a family curse, both characters have complicated motives for coming to Derceto, and Their actions are tainted by past personal traumas.
David Harbor brings his signature intensity to the role of Edward, but also his playfulness. When thrust into unimaginable situations, our natural reaction is to dread, even to question our own sanity, which David captures perfectly. However, sometimes we try to train ourselves against our worst fears with humor. The dry wit that David has brought to some of his most famous characters shines through in Edward, a curious and somewhat world-weary investigator.
Jodie Comer is no stranger to disappearing in a role, having recently won the well-deserved Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Play, alongside her BAFTA and Emmy awards. Jodie portrays Emily with a professional tone, while expressing concern for her missing uncle and fear for the fate that may befall her due to the Hartwood curse. Whether interacting with the strange inhabitants of the Deceto or against otherworldly beings, Jodie delivers a world-class performance.
No matter who you choose at the start of our game, you’ll experience the performance Alone in the Dark players deserve. The game demands a replay through the eyes of both characters, and we can’t wait to hear what you think of our two incredible protagonists.
Sound of trauma
Our game is set in 1920s Louisiana, in a time of instability and excess, caught between two World Wars. Realizing this dense atmosphere of “Interbellum Horror” called for a unique sound that reflected the chaos of the times, as well as the music that emerged from it.
Doom Jazz legend Jason Köhnen (Bong-Ra) showcased his talent for capturing the otherworldly chaos of Alone in the Dark, contributing songs that are both nostalgic and at the same time uplifting. modern… and from somewhere else, out of this world. Based on these songs, Sound Designer & Composer Árni Bergur Zoëga has created an eerie, mysterious soundscape that will keep you looking back for days – especially if you’re an ear user. listen.
