Hoosier Philly, Curly Jack Pointing to Fair Grounds Stock
Just transferred to a sophomore Hoosier Philly and Curly Jack rejoins trainer Tom Amoss’ warehouse on January 1 at Fair Grounds Racecourse & Slots. Both were about to go on stellar campaigns two years ago, and after their fall meeting at Churchill Downs, they were refreshed at Woodford Thoroughbreds near Versailles, Ky.
“Both will be gearing up to prepare for the Louisiana Derby (G2) and (Fair Grounds) Oaks (G2),” said Tom Amoss. “The Risen Star (G2) for Curly Jack and Rachel Alexandra (G2) for Hoosier (Philly).”
Scheduled for February 18, the $400,000 Risen Star and $300,000 Rachel Alexandra are the third of four local tournaments in preparation for the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Kentucky Oaks (G1) , both are at Churchill Downs in early May. Two Fair Grounds races provide qualifying scores on a 50-20-15-10-5 scale.
A perfect 3-to-3 at just 2 years old, Hoosier Philly earned 10 points against the Kentucky Oaks with her Golden Rod Stakes (G2) match at Churchill Downs in late November, which she beat. Knockyoursocksoff and the ultimate Untapable Stakes winner Quite mischievous equal to five lengths at 1 1/16 miles. Before that, she won the Rags to Riches Stakes by 7 1/2.
“Hoosier Philly is something,” Amoss said. “She’s different from what I’ve been. If she stays healthy, she will amaze the world.”
Curly Jack, 2-2-0 in six starts, won the Iroquois Stakes (G3) in September at Churchill Downs and most recently finished second behind Instant coffee in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stock (G2).
