A group of minors cleaned up Gulfstream Park paddock on March 30, but top demand is still strong at The Gulfstream Sale, Fasig-Tipton’s select store for 2-year-olds in South Florida.
Half sold in three hours, Spendthrift Farm’s Ned Toffey reviewed competitive bidding to secure a quick Bolt d’Oro for $1.2 million to top sales.
The selective sale shows a smaller portfolio of just 103 horses, with fewer ponies ending up under the hammer. Fasig-Tipton reports 35 horses from 52 offered have changed hands at a clearance rate of 67.3% for a total of $13,155,000. The median is $375,857 and the median is $300,000. The 17 unsold horses had an RNA ratio of 32.7%.
Last year, 67 horses were sold out of 105 on offer for a total of $25,360,000. The average price achieved is $378,507, along with an average price of $300,000. The 38 horses failed to meet their reserves to represent an RNA ratio of 36.1%.
“We’ve been doing this for a long time and have made a lot of sales 2 years old, and today is a sign of that,” said Fasig-Tipton. Executive Boyd Browning Jr. “There was a diverse group of buyers showing a great deal of interest and bids in those horses. It wasn’t an easy day for horses that didn’t hit either of those factors. With a 2 year old top seller, it’s never going to be an easy day if they don’t tick all the boxes. “

Two horses breached the seven-figure mark, with the aforementioned Bolt d’Oro being sold to Spendthrift Farm from a draft by Tom McCrocklin as Hip 48. “I was pleased with the buyer group in terms of attendance and activity,” Browning said. “It’s no secret that we wish we had more horses here and we’ll work hard to try to fix that in the future. Overall the market is very similar to what we’ve been through. in 2021, that’s very good. I think everyone expects us to be able to lock in this market for the rest of the 2020s.”
Spendthrift Farms purchased three chicks that became the top buyers of the sale, spending $2,475,000. Ciaran Dunne’s Wavertree Stables sent 12 through the ring, selling nine for a total of $3,920,000 to retain its position as a longtime top shipper.
“This is a select group of horses here, but at the end of the day, the ones that bring in all the money are the ones that do everything right,” said Jacob West, bloodline representative.
The general sentiment among buyers is to like the atmosphere in Miami and the quality of the horses on offer.
“I think the right horses are making the right money,” commented special agent Jamie McCalmont. “There aren’t as many horses here as usual, but if you have the right merchandise in the sale it makes a lot of money. I’m hoping the sale can take place here next year as Miami is a great destination for people to go to the horse business; it’s a great place. At this time of year, it would be a shame if this sale didn’t continue.”
Fasig-Tipton’s next Juvenile Sale will be the Atlantic Training 2-Year Sale on May 23-24 in Timonium, Md.
“No real surprises, no excitement, no despair, and we are looking forward to the next sale in Timonium, where we will have a portfolio of over 600 horses,” Browning commented. Browning commented. “This is going to be the best category we’ve had in that sale, continuing into the May sale.”
