Pimlico to Preakness Weekend Features 16 stakes


Highlighting the 147th run of Preakness Stakes (G1) for 3-year-olds, Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown, Maryland Jockey Club will introduce 16 shares, 10 classified shares, valued at 3.8 million dollars in wallet on Preakness weekend, May 20 -21, at history Pimlico racetrack.

Preakness Meet at Pimlico is scheduled to open from Thursday, May 12, and run through Tuesday, May 31.

With a history dating back to 1873, it’s the second oldest of the Triple Crown races, the $1.5 million Preakness 1 3/16 mile race anchoring a 10-stakes program , six classifications, worth $2.75 million on Saturday, May 20.

Other classified support stakes are a $200,000 Chick Lang (G3) Share for a 3-year-old six-car sprint, $150,000 Gallorette Shares (G3T) for a 3-year-old mare and fillet. 1/16 mile or more on grass, $150,000 Maryland Sprint Stakes (G3) in six hoops for kids ages 3 and up, and $100,000 Arabian Derby (G1) for kids 4 and up in 1/16 mile distance.

Sophomores will also be spotted on Preakness Day in both the $100,000 Sir Barton Stakes 1 1/16 mile on dirt track and the $100,000 James W. Murphy Stakes one mile on grass. Rounding off bets are $100,000 Jim McKay Turf Sprint Stakes, a 5-point run for kids 3 and up, and $100,000 in Skipat bets for girls ages 3 and up in six-distance sprints.

The $250,000 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (G2) 98th Run, one of the nation’s premiere events for 3-year-olds and 1 1/8 mile contention, will once again in its traditional place as a Friday, May 20 feature, on the Preakness Eve card, boasts six stakes, four classifications, worth $1.05 million in the wallet.

Also included in the program are the $300,000 Pimlico Special Stakes (G3) for 3-year-olds and older at Preakness 1 3/16 miles, $150,000 Miss Preakness Stakes (G3) for 3-year-olds to run six-way sprint and $150,000 Allaire du Pont Stakes (G3) for children and mares 3 years of age and older 1 1/8 mile.
