Woman steals rescue dog from shelter’s fundraising event
Security footage captured a woman stealing a rescued puppy from a fundraising event in Holly Springs, North Carolina.
Fundraising event held at Niche Wine Lounge on December 12, 2021. Event proceeds will support Pawfect match rescue and recovery, a non-profit organization dedicated to saving dogs and puppies from high-traffic shelters.
Ten rescue dogs, including puppies, were brought to the event to assist with the fundraising and
people who want to open the door of their home to a rescue dog or puppy.
Sadly, at about 6:30 p.m., a woman attending the event walked up to the crate of Miss Persy, a pit bull mix, and picked up the dog. She stepped outside and hopped in a white Honda Accord.
Footage shows the woman, accompanied by a man, walking around the event and paying special attention to Miss Persy. In the end, the man left and the woman stayed. No one knew until it was too late, the man sped away while the woman grabbed the puppy and ran away.
Rescuers posted about the situation on Facebook, asking the couple who stole the puppy to come forward:
Based on WRALPercy’s adoptive mother, Debbie Sandlin, says the woman who stole the dog actually spoke to a volunteer about adopting the dog and was told no. The rescue requires each adopter to fill out an application and complete the full adoption process before being approved for an animal.
Sandlin also said they are worried about Ms. Persey because she has not been vaccinated against rabies. She is prone to illness and it is not clear if she will stay in a suitable home or habitat.
A $1,000 reward is being offered for the safe return of Miss Persey:
Rescuers are working with local police and the media to find the couple who stole the dog and bring Ms. Persey back to safety. They shared security footage of the couple, including the moment the woman walked the puppy and left.
