Who is Tyler Huntley? Meet The Raven’s Beginning QB vs. Bears With Lamar Jackson Sick

The Ravens will be without winger Lamar Jackson for just the third time since he took over as a midfield starter for the 2018 season.

Jackson is facing a non-COVID-related illness that will keep him from taking action against the Bears. He traveled with the team and tried to compete, but was unable to, as NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport detailed.

As a result, Raven will be forced to play with their reserve midfielder against the Bears: Tyler Huntley. His name may not be a household name to casual NFL fans, but Raven has comfortably made him the team’s No. 2 quarterback ahead of the 2021 NFL season.

Here’s what you need to know about Huntley as he prepares to kick off his first NFL career.

THAN: Why Lamar Jackson Doesn’t Play With The Bears

Tyler Huntley College Career, NFL Stats

Huntley is a sophomore who played as a team at Utah. He was a three-year starting player for the Utes, who produced 3,092 yards of passes, 19 touchdowns and 4 interceptions in his final season with the team in 2019 while completing 72.3%. his number of passes. He also displayed good mobility, running for 290 yards and scoring five points during the season.

While Huntley flopped in the 2020 NFL Draft, Raven was quick to recruit him as a free agent. He served as the team’s No. 4 defender for most of the 2020 NFL season. He spent most of the year on the team training but was elevated to four games at the end of the season after Robert. Griffin III and Trace McSorley were injured.

Huntley has completed eight of his 16 career 54-meter passes. He also dribbled 13 times over 33 metres. So he played sparingly and never had to start a game (Griffin started the only game Jackson missed in 2020).

That said, Huntley performed well in the 2021 NFL pre-season. He completed 60 of 83 passes (72.3 percent) for 551 yards, four touchdowns and just one intercept while playing most of Baltimore’s tackles.

“He came on and played brilliantly,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said of Huntley after the team’s first pre-season game. “He plays with his arms, feet and head. He’s gone a long way in that direction to become the backup QB.”

Huntley’s strong performance earned him a back-up spot after his battle with Trace McSorley in the sixth round of 2019.

Speaking of McSorley, he’s still in the Ravens’ midfield depth rankings. The former Penn State star will be a substitute for Huntley. He completed only 3 of 10 passes in his career, but those completions produced 90 yards and one touchdown. He also had six career dashes from 18 yards.

If Raven has to use an emergency quarterback, player Sam Koch might get the nod. It likely won’t get there, but, if it does, ESPN listed Koch as Raven’s emergency quarterback. The 39-year-old has completed all seven 82-yard pass attempts in his career.
