Who is best suited to lead the world in major emissions cuts this decade?
That is the question being asked at UN headquarters in New York. Mexican diplomat Patricia Espinosa will step down as head of the United Nations Climate Change Agency in July after six years on the job.
Discussions about her replacement were slow. The recruitment advertisement for her successor is posted on the UN website on Friday, with just over a month left for governments to submit their candidates by the June 24 deadline.
Candidates will need to demonstrate senior leadership experience, “strategic vision and insight” into climate and development issues. Minister level experience is a plus. According to latest UN payment network.
With previous executive secretaries from Europe and Latin America, there is a push for African and Asian candidates to stand a chance. Female applicants are “particularly welcome”, the ad stipulates.

I haven’t written much about Patricia Espinosa because she doesn’t really do much, just deliver a few dull positional statements and sometimes scold for not doing what we were told.
Her predecessor, architect of the Paris Agreement and daughter of a communist revolutionary Christiana Figueres, at least had some entertainment value. You can always count on her to keep the laughs coming, with her frantic but mostly aimless energy, and she strange attacks on Capitalism.
