Which Focal Length Is Right for Your Portrait Photography?


When it comes to portrait photography, one of the most important choices you can make is the focal length you use, as it will have significant consequences on how your subject is displayed. If you’re new to portrait photography and wondering about the relationship between focal length and final image, check out this great video tutorial that will show you portrait shots taken from as low as 25mm to 135mm and how they differ.

The tradeoff in general is that wider focal lengths magnify features, while longer focal lengths tend to compress them. This is why 85mm . lens are often revered as classic choices for portraiture, as they strike a nice balance between the two extremes, providing enough compression for a more flattering look, yet keeping a short enough focal length to help show off. Show face shapes that make each person unique. That being said, you may find you prefer a different focal length, and more importantly, you may find different options work for different clients.
