LOS ANGELES – “Succession” and “Ted Lasso” are on the hunt Emmy Award Nominee that might add up to their previous titles, but they’re up against hungry new entrants.
When bids are announced on Tuesday, the social satire “The Succession,” the winner of 2020’s top drama, may face “The Squid Fishing Game.” The Korean hit about a brutal survival contest is vying to be the first non-English Emmy nominee.
The Emmys were once dominated by broadcast networks and then cable, with the rise of streaming services shifting the balance of power and perhaps the awards themselves. Netflix’s “Squid Game” ability to join the Emmy mix is the result of streaming’s focus on the global market.
Other possible TV series contenders include the modern western thriller “Yellowstone,” the workplace thriller “Severance,” and “Yellowjackets,” a hybrid tale of survival and the era.
The potential competition for “Ted Lasso,” which won seven titles including best comedy last year, includes the first seasons of “Abbott Elementary” and “Only Killers in the Building” – both popular and critically successful.
Past top comedy winner “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” is also scrambling for nods.
There are several broadcasts looking for some ultimate Emmy love. Among the TV series include “This Is Us” and “Ozark,” with “Insecure” and “black-ish” on the comedic side.
Jean Smart, who won last year’s Best Comedy Actress award for “Hacks,” is running again, as is the series, with “Ted Lasso” star Jason Sudeikis hoping to repeat the acting win. his 2021 comedian. Bill Hader is chasing third place in the category for “Barry”.
“The Crown,” which dominated the 2021 TV series awards, did not get televised during the eligibility period and will be disqualified this year.
