    • Birds in the foie gras industry are kept in cramped cages or cages, sometimes so small that the birds can’t even turn their heads. They are denied everything they need to be happy.
    • When the bird reaches about 8 to 10 weeks old, the feeding process begins and lasts about 4 weeks. Workers shoved long metal tubes down the birds’ throats and pumped into their stomachs far more food than they wanted to eat. This process, also known as “gavage,” is repeated several times a day. Forced feeding caused the livers of these birds to swell to ten times their natural size.
    • Forced feeding can also cause organ failure, injuries to the bird’s beak and throat, and pneumonia. Wire cages can cause foot and leg injuries, and confinement is a mental misery for these often curious and sensitive animals. At the end of this period, the birds are slaughtered.

But despite the fact that foie gras production has been banned, it is important to note that the export of foie gras to and from other countries still poses a major problem. As there is still demand for the product, large corporations continue to profit from this ruthless method of food production. And in major cities around the country like Portland, OR, for example, many high-end restaurants offer this as a menu item. So as long as the sale of foie gras remains legal, thousands of ducks and geese will continue to suffer.

After Animal Equality’s successful two-year campaign, India currently bans the import of foie graswhich means it is illegal to sell or buy it anywhere in the country.

We hope that other countries will join India in stopping the production and sale of foie gras.

OUR AWARENESS INSPECTION:

Animal Equality has been conducting surveys on foie gras farms in France and Spain since 2012. It is surprising that one of the farms in France is always open to the public and allows us to visit. look inside the living conditions of the birds and the feeding process.

What we found on all these farms were birds kept in small wire cages suffering from breathing problems, eye infections, broken wings and beaks. The birds are forced to endure extreme cruelty and abuse during foie gras production.

GENERAL IMPACT: Foie gras not only violates animal rights but also wreaks havoc on our environment. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, the processing of foie gras violates many environmental laws. For example, the largest foie gras farm in the US, Hudson Valley Foie Gras, has breached multiple Clean Water Act obligations over the past decade and has faced numerous inspections and thousands of dollars in fines.

Foie gras also poses a significant risk to public health. Due to the abuse and neglect the birds face, their immune systems weaken, making them more susceptible to illnesses like bird flu (avian flu). This is worrisome because bird flu is easily transmitted to humans. In the US, the most recent outbreak of bird flu was in 2014-2015. However, France has had a more recent outbreak in 2021 with the majority on foie gras farms.
As the world continues to suffer from the Covid-19 virus, it becomes clear how quickly these zoonotic diseases can spread and create a global pandemic.

The best way you can help ducks and geese suffering from this evil “delicious delicacy” is to refuse to eat and share this information with family and friends so they also avoid eating foie gras.
