WBA Orders Santa Cruz Vs Wood
The World Boxing Association requested a match between their two featherweight champions, Leo Santa Cruz and Leigh Wood.
The Mexican keeps the ‘Super’ version at 126lbs while the Brit is the owner of the WBA sub-strap. Asking for a battle be made between Santa Cruz and Wood as part of the Association’s ‘Reducing Plan’ so that only one champion represents them in each division.
In a statement, they said: “Both teams will have 30 days to negotiate the match from the time communication was sent to them on Wednesday, April 6.
“In the event that they fail to reach an agreement or either party refuses to conclude negotiations, the WBA Championship Committee may open the door to pursue a bid according to its rules.”
Wood, who defended his title with a stunning 12th round knockout against Michael Conlan last month, responded with the word “Ready” on social media about the WBA’s move.
If Santa Cruz vacates the title then the governing body could choose to elevate Wood to outright champion.
IBF champion Josh Warrington has indicated that he wants to unify his squad against Santa Cruz in Las Vegas.
