The dangers associated with vaping have increased over the years as researchers identify more and more toxins being inhaled with each breath.first This affects both users and bystanders. While the industry advertises vaping as a safer alternative to combustible cigarettes, the industry standard of “safer” may not be safe.
Compared to tobacco, which burns with thousands of chemicals, 70 of which are known carcinogens,2 vaping appears to be safer because the product contains less toxins. However, there is much more to consider. National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine3 found “there is compelling evidence that in addition to nicotine, most e-cigarette products contain and release many potentially harmful substances.”
When the products first hit the market, they weren’t immediately regulated by the FDA, and it was only a few years ago that they were added to the category of tobacco products.4 As a result, the industry grew at an alarming rate5 without going through any review process to assess safety.
In the last decade, researchers have found that the flavors in vape juices are harmful to the cardiovascular system6 and provide a tremendous amount of heavy metals.7 In one study, researchers found that 81% of the cartridges they tested contained evidence of fungi.8 Exposure to this impurity has been linked to asthma and reduced lung function.9
Researchers from another study found that regular e-cigarette smokers may have impaired activity of macrophages in the lungs, leading them to conclude that it may damage cells important immunity.ten Most recently, there have been reports of an outbreak of a mysterious lung disease affecting healthy people.11
The outbreak has affected individuals in 22 states, and numbers are growing rapidly. However, while reports were sent to health departments across the country, some doctors described previously unreported cases or included in the count.twelfth
More and more young people are getting chemical pneumonia
On August 23, 2019, CDC13 reported 193 possible cases of lung disease associated with e-cigarette use. Through September 1, 2019, NBC News14 found that health departments in 50 states reported 298 cases.
CNN15 reports that the city of Milwaukee has warned residents to stop vaping immediately after 16 people were hospitalized with chemical pneumonia. The Milwaukee health department said that each person told them they used THC products prior to being hospitalized. The number has risen to 32 cases of the lung disease, which health officials say is under investigation.
However, not all people hospitalized with chemical pneumonia have used THC products. Officials in Milwaukee16 warns that the link between respiratory illness and e-cigarettes is not fully understood. They suggested that it would be safer for residents to stop using all vaping products and e-cigarettes until the toxin could be identified.
At a press conference, Congresswoman Diana DeGette,17 D-Colorado, is noted that her state is the most popular place for teen vaping.18 Colorado law also allows recreational marijuana use.19 It could be argued that if THC was the sole offender and teenagers in Colorado commit more violations than in any other state, there would be more reported cases than the two currently under investigation.20
Health officials believe an individual from Illinois was the first to die21 recovered, which has only recently been reported. This could mean that the number affected and those who have died is higher than is currently known. People who have experienced this condition can have severe lung damage that lasts a lifetime.22
Watch for these symptoms and seek immediate medical attention
The father of a 20-year-old man from southeastern Wisconsin spoke to reporters about his son’s experience. The young man is a former high school athlete. His father said,23 “Last Wednesday, he did 25 to 30 pull-ups a day. And on Friday, it was reported that he was intubated. How quickly it happened.” When speaking to reporters, the young man said:24
“I’m in so much pain. I can barely breathe. Honestly, I feel like I’m dying. The doctors are saying how lucky I am to have been given another chance. My CAT scan looks like like a 70-year-old lunge. That’s what they told me.”
Doctors and federal officials do not have a standardized method for reporting and tracking illnesses. As reported by NBC News,25 Some states recently only sent out alerts to health care providers with information identifying vaping-related lung illnesses.
Cases nationwide include people ranging from teenagers to middle-aged adults who became ill with symptoms including cough, fatigue and shortness of breath.26 Some require ventilation in the intensive care unit to support their respiratory system. The American Lung Association’s medical director, Dr Albert Rizzo, believes there is something in common with vaping individuals, but it has yet to be linked to any particular device or chemical.27
Tests showed that the condition was not related to an infection and did not respond to antibiotics.28 In many cases, individuals report symptoms that come on gradually, including shortness of breath, chest pain, and shortness of breath. Others have reported vomiting, diarrhea, fever and fatigue.29

Doctors believe there are already warning signs that vaping is dangerous to your health, but without a standard method of reporting the condition, it seems to have fallen through the cracks. Health News Kaiser32 reported that it was about two years ago when Dr. Laura Crotty Alexander of the University of California-San Diego saw this for the first time.
She suspected a link to vaping but did not report it because there was no avenue to do so. The mounting evidence points to the significant dangers behind vaping and the risks associated with each use. John Parker of West Virginia University said it was in 2015 that he first saw a patient with vaping-related pneumonia.33
Unfortunately, the risks are only becoming more public. While Juul recommends that consumers do their own research on the product,34 many of the ingredients in their vape juice are protected as trade secrets.35,36 In many ways, vaping becomes, in effect, a chemical experiment that you perform with your own life.
The Vaping Industry Continues To Target Teens
Despite growing literature about the dangers of inhaling the chemical cocktail in vape juice, which teens find appealing because of the taste, the vaping industry insists the product is safe to use. and is not aimed at teenage users. JUUL Labs, who owns 76% market share,37 has said publicly that vaping should be restricted to adults who want to quit.38
However, this claim is called into question because the flavors, colors and packaging are seen as appealing to teenagers, who may also be attracted to being told they shouldn’t vape. In testimony before Congress, 17-year-old Caleb Mintz said that a representative was at his school as part of a mental health conference where the teacher was not present. At just 17 years old, Mintz caught up with Juul’s marketing tactics:39
“I believe the presenter sent mixed messages saying Juul is ‘totally safe’ and following through on any claims of being completely safe with ‘but we don’t want you to be a customer’.” I believe presenters are playing on the rebellious side of teenagers, where when teens are told not to do something, they are more likely to do it. “
Internally,40 Juul maintains a department for presenting academic programs. They ran an elaborate social media campaign to promote their products online to young people.41 Documents obtained by the subcommittee show that Juul hired a team to find 280 influencers in the Los Angeles and New York areas.42 “To sow Juul produce within three months.”
In the second contract, Juul sought to ensure social media influencers had at least 30,000 followers to attend launch events and establish a network to promote their influence.43 Each puff from the Juul delivers more nicotine than other e-cigarettes.44 Their products also involve the patented JuulSalts technology45 to relieve throat discomfort.
