There’s no rest for fatigue after the PGA Tour’s flagship event. Competitors will travel from Florida’s east coast to the Tampa area for the 2023 Valspar Championship at Copperhead Field in Innisbrook Resort. Known as one of the most dangerous golf courses on the PGA Tour schedule, Copperhead Course will once again attempt to tame some of the best golfers in the world.

Two-time Valspar defending champion Sam Burns looks set to win peat three times in his fifth tournament entry of his career. Burns has struggled to start 2023 with missing the two most recent designated events, but he may have found something in his game at the Players Championship.

Burns is joined by Presidents Cup teammates from this past fall, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth. Similar to Burns, there were quality moments for both of these players — namely Spieth with his final round spot at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and his steady play at the WM Phoenix Open.

Thomas came in with five top 25 finishes in his last six tournaments but none of the opening games left him in contention late Sunday. The two-time major champion was part of a combination a season ago and hopefully a return to Copperhead Course can yield similar results. Matt Fitzpatrick, Justin Rose, Keegan Bradley and Tommy Fleetwood are among the notable names looking for form as the 2023 Masters quickly approaches.

  • Justin Thomas (11-1): Does Thomas have too many tools to use? That’s the question I posed on the First Cut Podcast after the Players Championship with the 29-year-old becoming a consideration in the early part of 2023. The regular hit he has. possible and not necessarily the required stroke caused Thomas difficulty in executing. keep up with the likes of Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm. This discipline will be tested at the Copperhead Course, where he has four top 20 finishes in five trips, including T3 last year.
  • Jordan Spieth (12-1): Every now and then, the PGA Tour visits a course and you wonder how Spieth won there. That’s Harbor Town in 2022 and Copperhead Course in 2015. With four finishes in the top 20, including that win, Spieth is back in the Tampa area for the first time since 2018. It’s an addition. special for his schedule with a pair of Texas events coming up ahead of the big event at Augusta National. Thomas is expected to skip the WGC Match, and I wouldn’t be shocked if Spieth did as well.
  • Sam Burns (16-1)
  • Matt Fitzpatrick (16-1): It is reported that Fitzpatrick’s neck is slowly healing. First announcing his injury at Pebble Beach, the Englishman has since missed three of his five top-flight cuts of the year. Copperhead has to be the ideal pitch for his game, as shown by his finishing in the top five a season ago. However, given the injury and instability in irons (he ranks 124th in the field in terms of approach to strokes over the last 24 rounds), it wouldn’t be surprising if it was a Another short week for the US Open champion.
  • Justin Rose (January 22)
  • Keegan Bradley (January 25)
  • Tommy Fleetwood (January 25): Fleetwood continued golfing with TPC Sawgrass, but with that came another disappointing finish. The 76th final saw the Briton go from the first page of the standings to 27th. It had the nuances of déjà vu from 2022 when he experienced something similar at the Championships. players only to finish T16 the following week in their Valspar Championship debut.
  • Adam Hadwin (January 28)
  • Denny McCarthy (30-1): Victory will come soon. A pair that finished in the top 15 in the two most recent designated events eliminated a slip at the Honda Classic (where he competed despite feeling unwell). McCarthy’s presence on the pitch is always a topic of conversation, but it is improvements in the batting category that will propel him into the winner’s circle. He’s won more than four strokes from tee at TPC Sawgrass – the third best of his career.
  • Brian Harman (35-1)
  • Davis Riley (35-1)
  • Justin Suh (35-1)
  • Wyndham Clark (35-1)
