Using window blinds for creative portraits in the Studio

When looking for things to add to your photography studio’s list of equipment and props, some items may not be as obvious as others. Are window blinds on your list? Here’s how you can use Venetian blinds to add a different look to your portrait.

If you happen to have a studio with windows, chances are you have different types of blinds and shades. However, if you’re in a studio without any windows, you usually won’t find a pair of small curtains just lying around as a stand or as a gobo.

In this video from Adorama, photographer Gavin Hoey shares the process of adding curtains during a shoot to create three different looks by changing a few things. If you happen to have a window in your studio, you can do a similar look on a sunny day. Even if you do, you can always mount the window curtain on a lighted stand and move it around for more flexibility.

Different styles and types of blinds can create a variety of looks. What are some other non-photographic things you find yourself using in your studio? Let us know in the comments section below, and don’t forget to attach photos with them.
