USB ad group announced that the next generation USB4 standard will dual bandwidth of existing connectors — from 40 Gbps to 80 Gbps. And you may not even have to buy a new cable to take advantage of the new technology: As long as you have a USB-C cable rated for 40 Gbps, you should be able to achieve speeds of up to 80 Gbps. Updated USB4 specification features backward compatibility with USB4 version 1.0USB 3.2, USB 2.0 and Thunderbolt 3.

“Once again continuing the USB tradition, this updated USB4 specification doubles data performance to deliver higher levels of functionality to the USB Type-C ecosystem,” said President, USB Corporation. Promoter Brad Saunders said. “Solutions that have shown the most benefit from this speed boost include displays, higher performance memory, USB-based hubs and docks.”

With their impressive performance, it is perhaps surprising why they not only made it easy for us to use “USB5” and in fact only some cable that will deliver the promised speed will certainly make things confusing for consumers. Either way the update is “targeted specifically to developers at this time” so it may be a while before we start seeing computers boasting extreme connections. this quick.
