Tuna Fudge for Dogs {Your Dog Will Drool for This One!}
Share with fellow dog lovers!
If you participate in agility sports or other canine sports, you may have heard of the “tuna game.” It’s a great value homemade dog training method that’s quick and easy to do. Its strong scent is a powerful motivator, which is one reason tuna dog treats are so popular with trainers!
It has the same weight and consistency as marshmallows but don’t worry – NO chocolate, just tuna, flour and eggs!
Can dogs eat tuna?
Well, the answer is yes and no!
Yes, dogs can eat tuna in moderation. Tuna is rich in protein and Omega-3 fatty acids.
However, we all know that there is a risk mercury poisoning if we eat too much tuna – and the same is true for dogs. Tuna isn’t something you want to eat as a meal, just an occasional treat – like tuna fritters!
Can I substitute another fish?
You bet, you can substitute other canned meats as long as they’re boneless. Canned salmon (remember: boneless!), pilchardMackerel and even canned chicken are good substitutes.
Make Tuna Fudge for Dogs
The recipe list is very simple! You will need a 6-ounce can of tuna (packed in spring water) along with your favorite flour:
Do not drain the tuna; Just pour it all into a mixing bowl with flour. I used unbleached all-purpose flour, but you can substitute with your favorite flour.
Add an egg…
… And you’re ready to start mixing!
If you want to do this, you can put all the ingredients in a blender to create a smoother dough – but your dog doesn’t care! (And I don’t want the extra dishes!)
You’ll notice that I said “dough” not “dough” … this is a portion that resembles a thick cake batter.
You can use a greased cookie sheet – but I poured mine onto a piece of parchment that rests on a cookie sheet and spread the dough about 1/4-1/2 inch thick:
Place in the oven (recipe can be printed below) for 10-12 minutes then remove and flip the tuna loaves.
Put the cake in the oven for about 10 minutes, then remove from the oven to cool.
I cool the loaf on a raised tray:
When the tuna is completely cooled, place it on a cutting board and use a knife or pizza cutter to dip:
Want to make braised tuna in the microwave?
You can certainly make tuna fudge in the microwave. I made two batches at once using identical ingredients – and saw practically no difference in results.
It’s a rubber vapor treatment anyway, so microwaving won’t change the consistency as you might see with the dog fluff treatment.
I cooked in a glass Pyrex cake pan lined with parchment. After cooking on high for two minutes, I turned the loaf over…
Then I microwaved it for another two minutes – but you may need to adjust the cooking time depending on your microwave’s wattage.
From that point on, it was like cooking in the oven: let the loaf cool completely then cut into squares.
You’ll want to store the fudge in the refrigerator for up to four days or freeze it.
I gave Tiki and Barli samples of both oven-baked and microwaved tuna and they both loved it!
