Hunter Lawrence and Cooper Webb battled it out in Heat Race Two, with Webb scoring the win, while Jett Lawrence dominated the opening 450 Heat. Eli Tomac’s hard landing earlier in the day left the local hero a bit shaken, while Cooper Webb also hurt his hand a bit in Qualifying but really struggled with a knee injury.

Hunter Lawrence scored the winning goal ahead of his brother. Chase Sexton had a great run in the first turn but then crashed, leaving the defending champion with a lot of work to do from there. Justin Cooper was third, Eli Tomac fourth, Jason Anderson fifth, Justin Barcia sixth, and Cooper Webb soon dropped to seventh.

Eli Tomac moved up to third place after two laps and the home crowd spoke out in support of their man. However, Tomac made a mistake on the following lap, going down and losing some positions on a surface that looked quite difficult in terms of traction at both ends of the moto.

The race was five minutes old and Hunter was two seconds ahead of his brother. Jason Anderson moved up to third place, two seconds behind Jett. Barcia was fourth, Webb fifth, Cooper sixth and Tomac seventh. Chase Sexton came back from dead last on the opening lap to sit behind Tomac and challenge for seventh place.

By the tenth minute, Jett was behind Hunter and soon took the lead after the pit-board controller informed him that Jason Anderson was closing in on the pair from behind. Barcia remained fourth and at this point had a four-second gap over Cooper Webb, who was not chased by Chase Sexton.

Sexton got the better of Webb with just over five minutes left on the clock and lost the lead moments later, handing fifth place to Cooper Webb. Jett was 1.3 seconds ahead of Hunter at this point and the pair prevented Anderson from getting closer.

Jett Lawrence went on to claim his eighth win of his rookie 450 AMA SX season, his third on the trot. It was a clear and concise victory for the 20-year-old, set up with some really smart and deliberate line choices, while also avoiding trouble at turn one by being keenly aware of surroundings.

Hunter Lawrence is also strong and accurate. The 24-year-old overcame Honda 1-2, Aussie 1-2 and Lawrence family 1-2, the first brother 1-2 in the category.

Jason Anderson was third ahead of Justin Barcia and Cooper Webb. Injury to Webb prevented him from taking part in this competition on a difficult night for the 28-year-old. We may not actually see how the epic championship battle between Webb and Lawrence is decided but this is a brutal sport.

This win increased Jett’s championship lead over Webb from 12 to a much safer 20 points. 336 points compared to Webb’s 316.

Eli Tomac and Chase Sexton are tied with 282 points for third place, 54 points behind Jett.

One round to go… The final game in Salt Lake City is next weekend.

A Honda 1-2, an Aussie 1-2 and a Lawrence 1-2, the first sibling 1-2 in the category.

Jo Shimoda pulled away in the second half of the 250 Main, leading Levi Kitchen by 2.5 seconds at the halfway mark. The two upper laces on Kitchen’s left boot came undone as the race began, something the Kawasaki man certainly did not need to do.

RJ Hampshire and Nate Thrasher made contact early, which proved costly for both. At the halfway stage, Hampshire was two seconds slower than Kitchen after finally overcoming Thrasher’s progress.

Jo Shimoda went on to win the second Main Event with a clean and controlled ride after managing to stave off a late charge from Kitchen.

With Kitchen second and Hampshire third, those scores put them atop the Western Championship 250 points table with only the final 250 East-West heat coming up next weekend in Salt Lake City. Both Kitchen and Hampshire congratulated Shimoda on his win in the cool-down round.

Jordon Smith ran in third place on the opening lap but was dropped to fifth by the flag.
